FRUITCAKES

McCord’s Ferry could very well be Jonesboro, Georgia–a small, close-knit town where everyone basically knows everyone, and everyone eventually winds up at Mack’s Whirligig and Christmas Tree Emporium at some point during every day leading up to Christmas.  Into this small place on December 20, 1990, comes a boy whose heart has been cracked by a father who deserted him and his mother, and then 6 months later just “waltzed back in as if nothing had changed.” He’s angry, he’s hurt, and he’s run away as far as he could get in one day on a bike. It seems inevitable that he’ll end up at Mack’s barn, and he does, and thus begins a relationship that will have you looking for a tissue but also lifted by the end of the play and tickled by the antics of many of the denizens of this little town.  Add into this a Christmas pageant that threatens never to happen because there’s a rash of chicken pox going through the children in town.
