Auditions – The Wizard of Oz

AUDITIONS: Nov. 2, starting at 1 PM; Nov. 3, starting at 5:30 PM. Please arrive promptly as auditions may take some time; expect to stay for a while. Callbacks, if needed, will be Nov. 4, starting at 6:30 PM.

Please prepare 30-60 second segments from TWO (2) SONGS: one should show your range, and the other should be from the show, such as an excerpt from”Follow The Yellow Brick Road” or “Merry Old Land of Oz”. DO NOT SING “SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW.”

**However, if you are auditioning for the role of Dorothy then we encourage you to learn “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as we may ask you to sing parts of it during the audition process. This should NOT be your second prepared song.

You do not need a monologue; auditions will consist of cold reads from the script, learning and performing simple choreographed dance moves, and singing your audition songs.

All auditions and performances occur in our space at 1842 Lake Jodeco Rd., Jonesboro, GA.

Note: All ages and genders are welcome to audition for any role, regardless of the character’s description or traditional gender. The descriptions listed are general guidelines and should not discourage anyone from auditioning.

Email [email protected] with any questions. We can’t wait to see you!

To save time you can print this out and bring it with you to auditions.

Dorothy Gale: Mezzo-Soprano; age 12-16. Despite the casting by some productions, Dorothy is supposed to be a schoolgirl, not a young woman. She can be intimidated and is often fearful. She is a sweet, innocent country girl. She loves her dog, her aunt and uncle, and the 3 farm hands, who are like uncles to her. She’s protective and compassionate.

Zeke/Lion: baritone; adult; Zeke embodies the fear and uncertainty often associated with the cowardly lion, but he loves Dorothy and respects Henry and Em. He does grow somewhat toward what we’d expect of a traditional lion.

Hunk/Scarecrow: Baritone; adult; evinces some of the Scarecrow characteristics—doesn’t think ahead, but extremely good-hearted and loyal. The same is true of the Scarecrow; he says he doesn’t have a brain, but clearly, he does.

Hickory/Tinman: Tenor, Baritone; adult; Hickory has a tender heart and loves the family he works for. The Tinman is a stoic and brave character who, despite his fear, demonstrates great courage and loyalty.

Professor/Wizard: Supporting, non-singing, adult 30-60; might seem to be a conman on the surface, but he is kindhearted and gentle; the Wizard is all that; also recognizes he’s a humbug. He’s made the most of the simplicity of the people of Oz and especially the Emerald City, but despite having allowed these people to think he’s magical, he does care for the people and can be touched.

Wicked Witch of the West/Mrs. Gulch: Non-singing, 30-50; Cruel and power-hungry, Ms. Gulch/Wicked Witch will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She is mean, thoughtless, and not the brightest witch in the coven.

Aunt Em/Glinda: Mezzo-Soprano, 30-50 adult; Aunt Em is a farm woman—no nonsense, a bit hardened by work, in charge, knows who she is; seems hard emotionally, but that’s just on the outside. Dorothy is, in all but genetic ways, her child. Glinda feels this way about the Munchkins. She has a big heart and sincerely wants to help others as well (not JUST her Munchkins), and she’s courageous.

Uncle Henry/Oz Guard: baritone/tenor; 30-50; hardworking farmer; loves Em and Dorothy; somewhat softer than Em on his surface. The Oz Guard is pretty self-important, respectful (in awe) of the Wizard, and does want to help. Proud of his city. Wry sense of humor as Henry; jovial as Guard.

Nikko: Featured, non-singing; Leader of the Flying Monkeys. They speak in an unintelligible language and respect the Wicked Witch’s power, but they are also willing to challenge her.
