DREAMGIRLS

May 14, 12 noon-4 p.m. and May 15, 5:30-7:30; Callbacks TBA

The lead director, whose decisions these are, is a bit behind getting this information, so as Co-Director, I’m going to list the things I expect him to need or that I generally ask for in musical auditions. Prepare a 1-2 minute excerpt from a song in the style of, but not from, the show (but at least be familiar with the show songs because you very well may be asked to sing one or more, either alone or with others). We generally ask auditioners to do cold reads from the script with other folks, but occasionally we ask for monologues, so be prepared with one you think shows your strong suit(s), just in case. He may or may not ask you to stay beyond just a basic audition. (When I direct, I ask folks to stay for the entire audition period unless dismissed, but I have never had a 4-hour audition period, so he may be planning to see a few people at a time and let them go. Be prepared for either.) You’ll need to bring or fill out a resume and information (contact, etc.) form, and he will probably have a tentative rehearsal schedule for you to see, but we also always try our best to work around the existing obligations of those whom we cast and try to shift rehearsal dates so that we get good rehearsal time for everyone. The choreographer should be present at auditions and may ask people to do some simple movements; this is not a highly choreographed show, and if you’re familiar with the singing groups from that era, you know that the majority of dance will be stylized and relatively simple, and require no dance training. We do ask our cast members to help with set, props, decoration, painting, etc., and those things take place typically on Saturdays from 10-4 UNLESS the director has to have that time for rehearsals. Then we have to find time on Sunday afternoons and evenings on other days. If you have a headshot, that’s great; but if you don’t, no worries; we’ll snap a picture of you at auditions. This is about the best I can do, since the decisions aren’t ultimately mine. Check back again in case he gets his specifics to me.
